DAYTONA BEACH, FLA -- Jeff Gordon had nothing to smile about at the end of the Daytona 500 in a 35th place finish.
On lap 48 Jeff Gordon got caught up in a wreck that took out the first five cars.
Gordon led all 48 laps up until that point.
" We had such a great car, its just a shame for this whole team " said Gordon.
Jeff Gordon clearly had the best car in the race up until lap 48.
Ryan Newman was moving up through the huge pack after qualifying 39th, he was in 22nd on lap 48.
" All race we had a great car, to tell you the truth, we were a little optimistic about our chances on winning this race " said Newman.
On lap 108 of 112, Dave Blaney spun on the frontstretch to bring out the caution and the race for the win. Jimmie Johnson, Ryan Newman, Joe Nemecheck and Kenny Wallace were lined up. Ryan Newman made a daring move to go three wide on the backstretch and split Jimmie Johnson and Joe Nemecheck.
Ryan Newman took the checkerd flag under caution to win his first Daytona 500.
